Gammel Dansk or "Old Danish" was first produced in 1964 and is flavoured with 29 different botanicals including star anise, nutmeg, ginger, bay leaf, gentian, Seville orange, and cinnamon according to a secret recipe. Although originally created and produced in Denmark, Gammel Dansk is now made in Norway.

Notes of baking spice, liquorice and juniper, with a strong, very dry bitterness and a touch of tannin.

Can be used when a strong bitter liqueur is called for, or drunk in the traditional way: as a shot served in small cordial glasses, chased with a crisp pilsner.

About:

Originally created by factory manager J.K. Asmund of Danske Spritfabrikker, Gammel Dansk was released in 1964. Until it was launched, J.K. Asmund and his staff were at complete liberty to mix ingredients until they came up with the right flavour. They did not want any single flavour to dominate the overall taste experience, and consequently tested more than one hundred different herbal substances. It was not until three years later that Ashmund's final recipe was approved.
