Orinoco Bitters By Dead Rabbit - Hopping Good Bitters!

Date Posted:13 March 2015

Dead Rabbit is here!

Don't tell the Easter bunny...

We don't want it to be alarmed!  Dead Rabbit does not refer to the demise of our furry friend.  Dead Rabbit is actually an iconic Irish bar in New York City, located at the southern tip of Manhattan island.  The renowned Scottish bitters guru, Dr. Adam Elmegirab, created these bitters for Dead Rabbit, who use Orinoco as their house aromatic bitters.

Orinoco

The old town of Angostura, now Ciudad Bolivar, is the capital of Venezuela's south-eastern Bolivar State. It lies at a spot where the Orinoco River narrows. Amargo Aromatico, now commonly known as Angostura Bitters, was created here. The success of these bitters, along with Boker's Bitters from New York, took the bitters world by storm.

The lesser known Orinoco Aromatic Bitters remains somewhat of a mystery. Gathering a host of recipes, botanicals and researching herbal medicine, the recreation of these bitters pays homage to an early style of bitters, whilst adding a timely feel to the liquid.

Flavour Profile

The end result, Dead Rabbit Orinoco Bitters, has a host of botanicals, namely warm spices in the realm of cardamom and cassia bark, floral notes from chamomile, dried fruit flavours from raisins, fragrant aromatic bark like sandalwood and angostura, citrus oils from orange peel, and a bitter-sweetness from molasses.

The Good Spirit News Review sums up the flavour: "The nose is quite evocative, with floral and baking spice elements.  There is a definite bitter, yet almost nutty quality to the flavour.  ... What is most impressive about this product is that it truly is a universal style that will work with virtually any spirit."

They are a great replacement for other aromatic bitters.
